Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty reduces and reshapes the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) and sometimes the labia majora (outer lips). Women seek this procedure for various reasons, including physical discomfort during exercise, sexual activity, or when wearing tight clothing, hygiene concerns, self-consciousness about appearance, or asymmetry. The procedure is performed under general or local anaesthetic with sedation, and patient satisfaction rates are generally very high.

What does a Labiaplasty procedure involve?

Your consultation will be sensitive and confidential. Your surgeon will examine the anatomy and discuss whether your concerns are primarily functional, aesthetic, or both. The most appropriate technique is selected based on your anatomy and goals:

  • Trim (edge resection): The excess edge of the labia is trimmed along its length, reducing protrusion. Suitable when significant size reduction is the priority.

  • Wedge technique: A V-shaped wedge is removed from the central portion, preserving the natural edge and pigmentation. Results in a more natural appearance.

  • Clitoral hood reduction: If the hood is overly prominent, excess tissue can be reduced in conjunction with labiaplasty.

Surgery takes one to two hours. Incisions are closed with fine dissolvable sutures. Clitoral sensation is not affected by standard labiaplasty.

Your Recovery

Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are expected for the first week. Hygiene is important — gentle washing and patting dry is recommended. Tampons, sexual intercourse, strenuous exercise, and cycling should be avoided for four to six weeks. Desk work is usually possible within three to seven days. Final results are apparent at three to six months once all swelling has resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is labiaplasty only for cosmetic reasons?

No. Many women have functional concerns including discomfort during exercise or intercourse, chronic irritation, or difficulty with hygiene. Both functional and aesthetic reasons are valid.

Will I lose sensation?

Most patients do not experience long-term sensation loss when surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon. Temporary numbness or hypersensitivity is common but typically resolves.

When can I return to sexual activity?

Most surgeons recommend waiting six weeks to allow complete healing.

Will the surgery affect childbirth?

Labiaplasty does not affect the ability to give birth, though childbirth may alter the appearance of the labia.
